Rooibos, pronounced ROY-BOSS, is an evergreen shrub that comes from the Cedarburg region of South Africa. It is a naturally caffeine free herbal, low in tannins and very high in antioxidants. Although Rooibos is fairly new to North America, it has been consumed in South Africa for generations. According to research in South Africa and Japan, Rooibos has been shown to aid in health problems such as insomnia, irritability and hypertension. Studies also show that Rooibos relieves anti-spasmodic agents, which can relieve stomach cramping and colic in infants. It is also noted for its benefits in aiding digestion, calming the nerves, building the immune system, and potentially offering protection from heart disease. Since Rooibos contains powerful antioxidants it also helps boost the immune system, destroy free radicals and slow the aging process. Rooibos also contains vitamins and minerals including copper, magnesium, iron, potassium, calcium, flouride, zince and manganese. Since many Rooibos teas also contain fruit for added flavour, you also get the addition of vitamin C. Rooibos is the perfect choice for introducing children to tea and for those sensitive to caffeine.
